Year 5 Earthquake Research Report

Research some major historical earthquakes and create a report about one.

Please include:
·         Title
·         What are earthquakes? Where do they most commonly occur?
·         Where did it happen? (county and continent, or ocean area, maybe a map if you have time)
·         When did it happen?
·         What was the Richter scale reading?
·         How far below the Earth’s surface did it happen?
·         Who was affected? (Were people hurt? Were there any fatalities?)
·         Describe the damage caused. (Did the earthquake create other issues?)
·         What could have caused the earthquake? (consider its geographical position in regards to tectonic plates)
·         Any other interesting or significant facts that you would like to include.
Please limit the report to two pages (including pictures).

DO NOT copy and paste any written information from websites.
You have two lessons to complete this task and print it.

The Oldest Living Thing

Trees live much longer than any other type of plant or animal. In fact it’s possible to know the age of a tree by counting the rings in its trunk (each ring generally means one year).

The oldest living tree and hence one of the oldest known living things on Earth is a bristlecone pine tree located in California, USA. It’s actually over 4600 years old, now that's old.

The smallest bird in the world

At just 5cm long and 2g in weight the smallest bird in the world is none other than the Bee Hummingbird. Found mainly in Cuba and also holding the record for the smallest egg in the world these guys are tiny.
Like all hummingbirds they can fly not only forwards but also backwards, up, down and even just hover. Their small size and amazing flying skills mean they’re experts at moving from flower to flower collecting nectar and even small insects. In fact they’re so good at flying (some visiting as many as 1500 flowers a day) that they don’t even walk anymore and only use their feet for perching.
Now in order to maintain such flying control there’s one skill we haven’t touched upon yet, and that’s their ability to beat their wings at up to 80 times per second. That’s so fast that humans can only see the wings moving as a faint blur. Now that’s quick!
